English Updates

In fifth grade, we are winding up our journey with Milo and friends through the creation of some zany and creative word and number play portfolio projects.  We will also be participating in a letter writing campaign to a platoon of Marines, and delving into biography reading in preparation for our Living Wax Museum. 
 
In the sixth and seventh grade classes, we all breathed a sigh of relief as our protagonist, Brian, was rescued from the Canadian wild in Hatchet. Students presented research projects on myriad topics relating to survival including heart attach prevention, hatchet making, survival against a black bear, and a seek and find story board. In the coming weeks we will be studying and reading the short story genre. Additionally, students will participate in a letter writing campaign to a platoon of Marines. 
 
After leaving the Dystopian society exposed in Lowry’s The Giver, our eighth and ninth graders will journey into Mica High School in to meet our newest protagonist, Stargirl Caraway.  This Spinelli novel deals with issues of bullying, inclusion, creativity and conformity and will stimulate lively discussion.  Additionally, students will participate in a letter writing campaign to a platoon of Marines. 
 
In tenth and eleventh grade, we’ve moved from Gatsby’s roaring 20’s era of reckless consumption into the more stark reality of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Students will explore relationships alongside George and Lenny explore myriad topics.  Students will be refining their research portfolio projects in preparation for our Celebration of Learning.
