Gerald Karn Named Physical Plant Director

NEW WINDSOR, MD (July 31, 2017) – Gerald Karn, a seasoned facilities and maintenance professional with more than 40 years of experience serving the mid-Atlantic area, has been named physical plant director for Springdale Preparatory School.

Located in New Windsor, Carroll County, in the former Church of the Brethren Service Center, Springdale Preparatory School is a new day and boarding school that will serve students from up and down the East Coast and around the globe beginning in August.

Karn, a native of Frederick County, will manage all buildings, grounds and equipment for the school and will oversee capital planning and maintenance projects for academic buildings, dormitories, dining services and administrative offices on the 21-acre campus.

Most recently, Karn served the Church of the Brethren, overseeing the facilities he will continue to manage as part of Springdale Preparatory School. Before joining the school staff, he served the Brethren Center for six years, managing several departments including maintenance, housekeeping, and grounds. He was responsible for budget planning, development, monitoring and reporting. He provided space planning services, utilization, negotiating as well as scheduling of maintenance services including those needed on evenings, weekends and on an emergency basis.

“Jerry Karn knows our facilities inside and out and has maintained this property for years. By naming him to our leadership team, we can be assured our physical plant and maintenance operations will remain stellar, based on the high standard he sets for all operations of this facility,” says Johnny Graham, founding head of school for Springdale Preparatory School. “Jerry’s expertise will guide us as we grow and expand our operation in the years to come.”

From 2005-2011, Karn served as facility manager of maintenance for the Vindobona Nursing Home in Braddock Heights, Maryland. Previously he supervised daily operations for the American Red Cross in Rockville, Maryland, and Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Karn holds a Maryland State Second Class Stationery Engineer license and is certified by the National Association of Power Engineers – Maryland Chapter Five in chiller maintenance and HVAC operations. He is skilled in all aspects of environmental services including building inspection and preventative maintenance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, cabinet and countertops, drywall, HVAC, concrete, painting, acoustical ceilings, flooring, windows, interior and exterior trim work, and locks and doors.
