The Chinese Language and Culture Program promotes the study of Chinese in an international context. Given the importance of the Chinese speaking world and its global cultural, social, economic, and political impact, our mission is to promote the Chinese language as a tool for communication worldwide. All courses are mixed literacy courses, incorporating the fundamentals of language acquisition: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The beginning program introduces phonics/phonetics, the Romanization of characters called pinyin 拼音 and Chinese Simplified characters called Hanzi 汉字, as well as foundational syntax, structure, grammatical concepts and culture.
Each week, students will engage in activities, games, and crafts to learn about Chinese culture.
Dr. Aileen Chun-Lin, 陈美莉博士 directs and facilitates the courses. A bilingual speaker of Cantonese/Zhongshan dialect/Mandarin and English, Dr. Chun-Lin was born and raised in Hawaii, and spent her summers in China as a student in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Zhongshan. She is an alumnus of Mun Lun Chinese School in Honolulu, Zhongshan Overseas Middle School and Zhongshan University. She has also taught in the US, including the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Middlesex County College and Rutgers University, and in China at Shanghai United International School, Shanghai International Studies University and Zhongshan University. A polyglot at heart, she also teaches French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Arabic.
