02 May Science Updates
In 5th Grade Science, students began our final unit on Weather and Climate. Right before testing, we explored how clouds are formed and experimented with rain formation. As a final project, students are currently working diligently on preparing presentations about each of the Biomes present on Earth. They will present their reports on May 4th during class.
In 6th and 7th Grade Science, students completed a poster project for individual planets in our solar system. They each presented a poster to the rest of the class. They enjoyed the process of creating a tangible presentation project. Students are currently conducting a research project on Environmental problems facing the state of Maryland. Each student will focus on a different problem and present alternative solutions to the rest of the class on May 4th.
In 8th Grade Science, students concluded study of Work and Simple Machines. This week they have been engaged in understanding how sound is created and transmitted. We will conduct some demonstrations of sound later this week. During testing week, they also played a sound identification game in the format of Jeopardy! The two teams were boys and girls, the girls dominated in sound recognition!
In Biology, students completed the unit covering the Respiratory, Circulatory and Excretory systems. They explored the relationship between all three systems working together to eliminate body wastes. This was followed by a brief study of the causes of infectious diseases culminating in a research project of various serious diseases. Each student was assigned his or her own “infection.” These range from Varicella to Ebola. Presentations will begin on May 2 and end May 4.
