12 Feb Robotics Program Finishes Second in State Championship
(New Windsor, MD) – The Cyber Lions, Springdale Preparatory School competitive VEX robotics middle school team, lost in the final match at the state championship alliance competition last weekend at Hereford Middle School.
The team of Nick Wolfe, Tyler DiStefano and Gavin Eaves received finalist ribbons and earned Springdale’s first ever performance trophy after joining the second-place team in the alliance round. Springdale finished fourth overall in the individual team competition, and second place in the skills competition. The middle school team finished that state championship with a 5-2 record.
“To be a new team and reach the finals of the state championship is an incredible achievement,” says Dave Magaha, robotics team coach for Springdale Preparatory School. “No program does that. The boys really came together as a team. It was a pleasure watching them learn and gel as a team.”
The high school team of Nic Porter, Alex Nichols and Jeffrey Graham finished a successful first season as a University of Maryland Eastern Shore VEX qualifier. The team reached the semi-finals but did not qualify for the state championship.
Both teams will return to competition next fall with a year of valuable experience behind them.
