03 Dec Springdale Preparatory School Set to Honor New Windsor High School Basketball Programs
(New Windsor, MD) – When the Springdale Preparatory School Lions host their first home games ever on December 4, 2018, the school will honor the New Windsor High School basketball programs of the 1950s, the last groups to play.
“There hasn’t been a high school basketball game in New Windsor since 1959,” says New Windsor Mayor Neal Roop who also serves as Springdale Prep’s director of institutional advancement. “We will honor former players during a halftime ceremony on center court.”
At least 10 men and 10 women who played for the local high school have agreed to join in the celebration at Springdale Preparatory School, located at 1000 Green Valley Road in New Windsor.
“I’m pleased to be a part of Springdale Preparatory School’s opener and I’m looking forward to having a team in town we can enjoy supporting,” says Dan Hartzler, who played on New Windsor state tournament teams in 1958 and 1959 and is a member of the Carroll County Hall of Fame.
Hartzler says his biggest thrill as an athlete was not participating in the state tournament.
“For me, it was not going to the district finals or state finals,” he says. “For me, the thrill was beating Westminster because they were so much bigger than we were.” Hartzler recalls beating Westminster his junior and senior years.
Joining Hartzler will be Buzzy Lambert and Jack Baile, both basketball stars who lettered in basketball and baseball at Western Maryland College, and Jack Nevius, a 1956 graduate who holds the record for most points scored in a game (56) for New Windsor High School. He led Carroll County with a 22 ppg. average in 1956.
Springdale will host Mercersburg Academy on December 4. The JV team will begin play at 4:30 p.m. and varsity will start around 6:00 p.m.
Springdale Preparatory School is building a national caliber program, under the leadership of head coach Tyrone Johnson, a coach of the year in Georgia in 2017. The Lions recently returned home following tournament play in Mercersburg, Pa., and boast a 4-4 record.
The Springdale Lions are playing a national caliber independent schedule, including the Bartlett Invitational in Chattanooga, TN, December 13-15. For the schedule, visit https://springdaleps.org/athletic-schedules/.
